Structures of German Emigration and Remigration: Historical Developments and Demographic Patterns

Abstract Germany today is one of the world’s most important countries immigration but at same time a country emigration. During last three decades, more than 3.3 million German citizens have left whereas 2.5 returned. Overall, 3.8 Germans live outside in another OECD. The chapter analyses basic structures emigration and remigration. Germany’s development as includes major historical predecessors also recent, slowly increasing level international mobility population. geographical pattern departure from describes heterogeneous phenomenon related to urban regions with higher shares well-qualified people, close spatial links, least neighbouring south west. In long term, Europe has stabilised destination region Americas, overall, lost their attraction compared earlier periods Demographically, younger population particular closely other transitions within life course including changes relationship status. motives migration illustrate link between economic, partnership family-related reasons help us understand recent experiences mobility.
